Golf is played in nature.
But it has a carbon footprint.

Like any leisure activity, golf generates greenhouse gas emissions. It's time to measure them and act.

55%

Travel to courses

Regular driving to local courses is often the largest single source of emissions. Car type, distance, and frequency all matter.

20%

Golf trips

A single long-haul golf trip can equal months of local emissions. Flights, hotels, and multiple rounds add up fast.

8%

Equipment

Clubs, bags, balls, and apparel carry an embedded carbon cost from manufacturing and global logistics chains.

17%

Course maintenance

Mowing, irrigation, fertilisers, and machinery used throughout the year contribute significantly to every round played.

Why trees?

The most natural solution

Trees are nature's own carbon capture technology — and they do far more than store CO₂.

Natural carbon capture

Trees absorb CO₂ through photosynthesis and store it in biomass and soil for decades.

Ecosystem restoration

Planting native trees rebuilds lost ecosystems, restores water cycles, and creates wildlife habitats.

Certified & verified

Every project certified by Verra or Gold Standard and company audited by Arthur Andersen.

The Carbon Footprint of Golf

An evidence-based guide to understanding golf's environmental impact — and what golfers can do about it.

Golfer

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases — primarily CO₂ — produced directly or indirectly by an activity. Measured in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e), it is the key metric for understanding and managing climate impact.

For a golfer, this means accounting for all emissions generated by their golf activity over the course of a year.

Main sources of emissions in golf

  • Travel to courses — Regular driving to local courses is typically the largest single source of emissions for club members.
  • Golf trips & holidays — A single long-haul golf trip can equal months of local golf emissions.
  • Equipment — Clubs, bags, balls, and apparel carry an embedded carbon cost from manufacturing.
  • Course maintenance — Mowing, irrigation, fertilisers, and machinery throughout the year contribute significantly.

How much CO₂ does a round produce?

A typical round — including car travel — generates 10–35 kg of CO₂. A golfer playing 40 rounds per year accumulates on average 2 tonnes annually. Add a long-haul trip and that figure can double.

Golfers can take action

The Golf Decarbonizer gives every golfer a precise measurement of their footprint — and an immediate, verified way to offset it. Golf is played in nature. It's only natural that golfers protect it.

Who we are

About greenzzly

We built greenzzly because we love golf — and we love nature. We believe golfers shouldn't have to choose between them.

Our mission

To make every golfer aware of their environmental impact and give them a simple, verified way to offset it.

Our vision

A world where every round of golf contributes to restoring the natural landscapes that make the sport possible.

Why golf?

Golf is uniquely connected to nature — courses are played in it, depend on it, and golfers love it. That creates a natural motivation to protect it.

Our story

Greenzzly was born from a simple question from a kid on a golf course: "Mum, is golf really green?" That question sparked our curiosity — and led us to understand the real impact of golf on the planet, and to decide to act.

Our journey

2024 — The idea

The concept of a golf-specific solution is born. Research begins into the environmental impact of golf and certified reforestation operations.

2025 — The build

Creation of the Decarbonizer. Investor search and business model testing across Europe.

2026 — The launch

Greenzzly launches in the USA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Decarbonizer, our tree planting, and how we verify impact.

Child hugging a tree
How is my footprint calculated?
We use peer-reviewed emission factors specific to golf — covering car travel, flights, equipment manufacturing, and course maintenance. Your answers are matched to these factors to give a precise annual CO₂ figure in tonnes.
How many trees are needed to offset my footprint?
The number depends on your footprint and the species planted. We use conservative sequestration estimates — 20–35 kg CO₂ per tree per year over 30 years — validated against Verra VCS and Gold Standard methodologies.
Where are the trees planted?
Trees are planted in certified projects in Brazil (Atlantic Forest), Senegal (Sahel), Cambodia (Mekong), and Romania (Carpathians). Exact locations are visible on the Impact Tracker map.
How do I know the trees are really planted?
Every project is certified by Verra VCS and/or Gold Standard, requiring independent third-party verification of planting and survival rates. Impact data is also audited annually by Arthur Andersen.
Who verifies the projects?
Our projects are certified by Verra VCS and Gold Standard. Overall impact metrics are subject to an independent annual audit by Arthur Andersen, ensuring full transparency.
Can my golf club use greenzzly?
Yes! We have a dedicated partnerships programme for golf clubs, tour operators, and equipment brands. Contact us via the Contact page to discuss options.
